A frigid winter day sets the stage for a POV drive in a rare 1957 Porsche 356 Carrera GT coupe, powered by the legendary four-cam, air-cooled flat-four engine originally developed for racing icons like the 550 Spyder. Tedward gets behind the wheel of this lightweight, factory-built GT—an exceptionally valuable and highly specialized machine.
Unlike standard pushrod 356 models, this Carrera GT features the exotic Type 547/1 four-cam engine, a costly and complex powerplant requiring expert maintenance. Originally imported to the U.S. by Max Hoffman, chassis 913 retains its racing pedigree, complete with plexiglass windows, minimal trim, no heater, sparse interior, 80-liter fuel tank, and Sebring sports exhaust. Even the date-stamped wheels and numbered components reflect a meticulous restoration.
After carefully following the startup procedure—fuel on, coils engaged, revs held at 2,000 RPM—the drive begins. The car is loud, raw, and mechanical, with a uniquely sharp engine character distinct from typical 356s. Though not overwhelmingly powerful by modern standards, its sound and heritage make the experience unforgettable.
