The original Porsche Turbo Carrera stunned the automotive world in 1974, establishing Porsche as a true supercar contender. In 1991, the second-generation Turbo arrived in the sleek Type 964 body, once again redefining performance. Unlike many exotics, the Turbo 3.3 was civil enough for city driving yet capable of nearly 170 mph when unleashed.
The 964 was a major leap from the Carrera 3.2, with Porsche claiming 87 percent new components. It featured a redesigned nose and tail with molded thermoplastic bumpers, a new front suspension with coil springs and shocks replacing torsion bars, and upgraded brakes with cross-drilled, ventilated rotors.
Power came from the M30/69 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-six producing 320 hp at 5,750 rpm, aided by a larger intercooler for better efficiency. The result was staggering: 0–60 mph in just over four seconds and quarter-mile runs in the 12s at 108 mph, making it the fastest-accelerating production car of its time.
