1983 Fabcar 935/84 Heads to Bonhams’ Quail Auction

Built and raced by Bob Akin during the 1983 and 1984 IMSA seasons

Built and raced by Bob Akin during the 1983 and 1984 IMSA seasons, this 1983 Porsche Fabcar 935/84 is a unique one-off evolution of the 935, engineered to meet Class 2 weight regulations and remain competitive against newer GTP machinery.

Developed by Dave Klym of Fabcar, the 935/84 utilized components from Derek Bell’s wrecked 935 L1 and featured a custom space-frame chassis, which significantly reduced weight. It retained the 3.2-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine from the K3, paired with a mix of K3 rear suspension and 935 Moby Dick front suspension. The original aluminum Kremer K4 body was reworked and molded in fiberglass for further weight savings.

Wearing its iconic Coca-Cola livery, the 935/84 made an impressive debut at the 1983 Daytona Finale, qualifying third and finishing second overall. In 1984, it continued to perform strongly with Bobby Rahal, Hans Stuck, and John O’Steen among its drivers, including a third-place grid start at the 12 Hours of Sebring and a fifth-place finish.

Later that year, it competed at the Daytona 24 wearing silver Ralph Lauren Polo livery and finished fifth overall, just behind Akin’s new Porsche 962.The car’s competitive career concluded at the 1986 Sebring 12 Hours. In 2007, it was restored and later ran in historic events, including Rennsport V, where factory driver Patrick Long drove it.

Documented with period photographs and known among enthusiasts as “The Last 935,” this historically significant Porsche represents the final chapter of privateer 935 racing. It will be offered by Bonhams Cars at their Quail auction on August 15, with an estimated price of $1,100,000–$1,400,000.
