Porsche introduced a turbocharged 944 in 1985, boosting output from 150 to 220 horsepower. Enhancements included a turbocharger, integrated front bumper, improved aerodynamics, a reinforced gearbox, 911 brakes, and a revised final drive ratio.
The 1988 944 Turbo S pushed power to 250 hp—100 more than the standard 944—thanks to a larger K26-8 turbo and updated engine mapping that maintained full boost up to 5,800 rpm. The S model also featured 928 S4 front brakes, adjustable Koni shocks, reinforced front frame rails, ABS, a limited-slip differential, and power front seats. Just 1,635 Turbo S units were produced in 1988.
In this video, JayEmm from Cars takes a 1988 944 Turbo S for a spin, sharing what it’s really like to drive this 1980s performance icon. Priced near Ferrari territory at the time, the 944 has always lived in the shadow of the 911—but how does it actually perform?
