Magnus Walker takes a spin with Gael Buzyn in an ultra-rare 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo Cup on the streets of Long Beach and the LBGP circuit, exploring what makes this iconic race car so special.

The 944 Turbo Cup was created in 1986 as a one-make race series to promote 944 sales, offering privateers and pros an affordable, competitive racing platform with TV coverage and prize money.By 1988, the Turbo Cup added boost to the 2.5L four-cylinder engine, producing 250 horsepower.

The car featured upgraded brakes and suspension, lightweight fiberglass panels, and a stripped interior, shedding 600 pounds compared to a standard 944 Turbo. Thirty-five cars competed in the Rothman’s Turbo Cup, with a support race on the F1 calendar.

Walker visits Long Beach to drive Gael’s Turbo Cup car, purchased for its authentic racing history and striking livery. The car, originally driven by Jacques Defontaine, retains its track-focused setup—manual steering, stiff suspension, and minimal sound damping—delivering a pure, authentic driving experience.
