Porsche 16-cylinder engine – 6.6 litre version of the 16-cylinder engine type 912
Immediately after the Porsche 917 hit the track, the design team continued its research into improving the car. One of these efforts was the development of a flat-16 engine. The experimental engine was not initially planned for use in Can-Am racing, but later, when Porsche was forced to look overseas due to changes in the world championship regulations, it was considered for installation in the 917. Four variants were designed, differing in displacement.
