This Porsche race car was constructed between 2022 and 2023 using frame components and body panels from the 1966 Porsche 906 that was converted to Spyder form by Alwin Springer for Vasek Polak in 1970. After being campaigned by Polak to a pair of SCCA wins in 1970, the original Spyder was sold to Harold Kirberg, who campaigned in SCCA competition for three seasons before further modifying the bodywork. Chassis 906-136 changed hands in the late 1970s and was subsequently purchased by a collector who raced with the Kirberg Special bodywork through the 1980s before placing it in storage.
After the original portion of the chassis was sold and rebuilt to coupe form, the removed Spyder-specific chassis components and body panels remained in storage with the previous owner for two decades before being sold to the current owner, the proprietor of GA Kundensport in Santa Paula, California.
The subsequent build by Kundensport included the fabrication of a replacement frame with the integration of Spyder chassis elements, refurbishment of the body panels used during Polak’s ownership, featuring a corresponding silver Vasek Polak livery, and the installation of a Super Tec Performance-built 2.0L flat-six engine and a magnesium-case five-speed manual transaxle.
Additional features include Bosch slide-valve mechanical fuel injection, ventilated disc brakes, coil-over shock absorbers, staggered-width 15” wheels, and fiberglass bucket seats upholstered in red. After its completion, the reconstructed Spyder was campaigned at the 2023 Rennsport Reunion and later placed second in its class at the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance and first in its class at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in 2024.
The car, now known as chassis 906 VP1, is accompanied by a 1970 Ford F-600 box truck that was reportedly used as a race support vehicle by Vasek Polak in the 1970s and was refurbished by the current owner before being offered on BaT in December 2024.
This 906 Spyder is now offered on dealer consignment as part of Wob’s Icons of Zuffenhausen Collection with photos from its reconstruction, copies of Alwin Springer’s Racing with Porsche in North America and Jerry Pantis’s The Porsche 904, 906 & 910 in the Americas, show awards, and a bill of sale.
The original Vasek Polak 906 Spyder began its life as one of approximately 50 coupes built for homologation in FIA Group 4 competition during a single year of production and was campaigned initially by Porsche Car Pacific in 1966. After being purchased by Vasek Polak in 1970, the car was converted to open-roof configuration by Polak’s chief engineer Alwin Springer and chief mechanic Dieter Inzenhofer with work including modifications to the chassis to accommodate a fiberglass body with a 908/03-inspired tail and low-profile doors. The body was later removed under Harold Kirberg’s ownership and replaced with wedge-style bodywork, which remained in use during races in the 1980s. The Vasek Polak body panels were reportedly retained and remained with the previous owner in storage for over four decades.
During the reconstruction performed between 2022 and 2023, the Vasek Polak body panels were installed over a chassis that combined portions of the period Spyder’s framework with tubing fabricated using factory drawings and another 906’s frame for reference. Guidance on the chassis layout, suspension pickup points, and livery is said to have been provided by Vasek Polak team members Alwin Springer and Dieter Inzenhofer during the project.
The body is finished in a silver and blue livery replicating that worn by the car while campaigned in SCCA competition by Polak in 1970. Features include front canards, a blue-tinted wrap-around windscreen, a pedestal-mounted rearview mirror, a roll bar integrated into the frame, dual carburetor clearance tunnels on the rear deck, a ducktail rear spoiler, and cookie-cutter exhaust outlets.
The five-spoke wheels are finished in black and are wrapped in Goodyear Blue Streak Sports Car Special tires measuring 6.00-15 up front and 7.00-15 at the rear. Stopping is handled by ventilated disc brakes with aluminum calipers and dual master cylinders.
The left-hand-drive cockpit houses a pair of fixed-back fiberglass bucket seats that are trimmed in red vinyl. Equipment includes a red Schroth six-point harness for the driver, a red lap belt for the passenger, a central shifter, a padded driver-side headrest, an electrical cut-off switch, and a fire extinguisher. An Alwin Springer signature is present on the bulkhead, and a Vasek Polak Jr. signature is present on the driver-side sill.
The three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a VDO green-letter 10k-rpm tachometer, while gauges monitoring oil pressure and oil temperature are situated to the driver’s left and right, respectively. The car is not equipped with an odometer, and total mileage is unknown.
The 2.0-liter flat-six is said to have been built by SuperTec Performance in Fallbrook, California, during the 2022-2023 project using period pistons and cylinders, titanium connecting rods, an early Type 901 aluminum case, and modified cylinder heads designed for use with fuel injection. The Bosch Kugelfisher mechanical fuel injection pump is reportedly serviced and set up by Pacific Fuel Injection in Portland, Oregon, and feeds slide-valve throttle bodies topped by fiberglass intake trumpets. An oil cooler is situated at the nose of the car.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Type 906 five-speed manual transaxle featuring a magnesium case that was reportedly sourced from an Italian foundry by Porsche historian Kerry Morse, along with mainshaft, gears, and nose cone. The Rose-jointed suspension features a double-wishbone front setup and reverse rear upper wishbones, paired with single lower links and parallel radius rods. Coil-over shock absorbers and adjustable anti-roll bars are utilized at each end. Various titanium suspension parts and hardware are reportedly sourced from Germany.
A chassis tag affixed inside the front compartment is stamped with chassis number 906 VP1. The chassis number of the 906 that was originally modified under Vasek Polak’s ownership, 906-136, remains with a 906 coupe that was rebuilt using the original portion of the chassis in the mid-2000s by Emory Motorsport.
The included 1970 Ford F-600 box truck was reportedly used as a race support vehicle by Vasek Polak in the 1970s and was refurbished after being acquired by the current owner in 2010. The truck features a cab finished in white with hand-painted BMW lettering and a white cargo box with painted Vasek Polak graphics along with a roll-up door, a hydraulic liftgate with ramps, wood flooring, overhead lighting, a removable stairway, and a Snap-On toolbox.
Power is provided by a 360ci V8 linked with a four-speed manual transmission, and additional equipment includes a dually rear axle, 19.5″ steel wheels, a black vinyl bench seat, and a tachometer. The box truck had been previously listed on BaT in November 2024 and again in December 2024. It is accompanied by a clean California title in the owner’s name.
