In the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Jay takes a deep dive into a truly unique creation—an air-cooled 1986 Porsche Targa restomod fitted with an innovative electric hybrid assist system. Built by the team at Galpin Auto Sports in collaboration with legendary German Porsche tuner BB, this reimagined Targa blends vintage design with cutting-edge tech.
Instead of using a traditional turbocharger, this innovative setup integrates an electric motor where the flywheel would typically be, nestled between the engine and transmission. Developed by Vonin, the system works like an electric flywheel, delivering power instantly with no lag—just immediate torque and acceleration. It doesn’t allow for electric-only driving or fuel savings; it’s purely for performance.
Underneath, it features a custom-built 4.0-liter flat-six engine from Ed Pink Racing Engines, capable of producing a combined output of around 550 hp. Backing it up is a robust G50 5-speed transmission, upgraded suspension modeled on the 997 GT3, and Brembo brakes.
