In a recent head-to-head drag race, Carwow tested the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid against the BMW M8 Competition to see which performance coupe could dominate the quarter mile.

The Porsche 911 GTS is equipped with a 3.6-liter flat-six turbocharged engine, further enhanced by an electric motor and an electrically driven turbocharger. The combined output is 541 horsepower and 610 Nm of torque, delivered through all-wheel drive and an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The BMW M8 Competition counters with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, pushing 625 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. It also has an all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The results? The Porsche came out on top. Off the line, the Porsche launched cleanly and pulled ahead despite the BMW’s power advantage. The BMW, although potent, struggled with traction and was unable to compensate for the extra weight as it is 330 kg heavier than the 911. In the end, the Porsche clocked a 10.7-second quarter mile, beating the BMW’s 10.8 seconds.

In rolling races from 50 mph, the BMW initially pulled ahead thanks to its torque-heavy V8. But in a second rolling race using the Porsche’s Sport Response mode, the 911 surged forward and held the lead. The hybrid system contributed to sharper response and mid-range punch.
