In its first years, the 911 was a single model, but in 1966 it was joined by the more powerful 911S.

Then the following year, the 911 developed into a three-model range as had its predecessor the 356 in the mid 1950s. At the top of the range was the 160bhp 911S, next came the previously base 911, now called the L, and the entry-level model, the 911 Touring which sported 110bhp against the 130bhp of the L. Less expensive to build and with only a four-speed gearbox as standard, the Touring was also significantly cheaper.

Porsche maintained a three-model line-up (which by now included the Turbo) until 1978, when the 911range was simplified to two models, the SC and the Turbo.
